My Return Home in 2004
Well, I made it back! And while
it's fantastic to be back & to have completed such a huge trip, I
wanted to carry on!
Apologies for the delay of this
report; I've just had to deal with over 3 months of post!!!
A superb greeting awaited me on
my return to Corfe Castle, not least of which was the police escort
down Corfe's main street!! A lot of people were in The Square along
with a Bournemouth Echo photographer.
So at approx 2.15 on the 21
August I found myself back at my starting point after 3751 miles and
105 days. Just a small bike ride, then! Ironically, the last day's
mileage was, I think, the worst ever! An appallingly low 11.73
miles!!! Mind you I did get up to a dizzy 31.3mph down Kingston hill!
In the evening there was a party
at the Royal British Legion - hurriedly brought forward a week due to
me being too fast!
There I stood up and thanked
everyone for all that they had done:
Mum, for funds, looking after my
house, the buffet and other homecoming arrangements.
My brother, Chris, for
research, sourcing & total funding of the fabulous Xda II internet
mobile phone (which was also my entertainment centre, camera, video
camera, album, dictaphone, calendar & messaging centre!)
My good friend and may I say
moral officer, Oliver, (Sir) for the website & all associated
work, not to mention a lot of co-ordinating work too!
My equally good friend Steve for
building the trailer and, at short notice (and when they were busy)
putting up a marquee at the Legion and doing a disco to boot!
Gordon Smith, the chairman of
Corfe's Legion, for the excellent police escort! All the businesses
that had contributed (please see sponsors page) In addition, Dragons
Bakery, in Corfe, had made a cake for the evening party, with not
only a map of Britain on it, but also a photo of me at Lands End in
edible ink & paper!!! Brilliant!
Lastly I thanked Mike (Davies) -
the events co-ordinator at Swanage Hospital - for his support and
help.He then spoke about the new Out-patients Department at the
hospital. Then the cake was cut!! And a good time was had by all.
Then I went home to a real bed ! (not as good as the camping
mattress!) When's the next trip..........?!! Soon, I hope - it's been
a week now and it's weird being in the same place all the time.
