Welcome to a page all about me and what I do

I was born in Buckinghamshire and grew up in a village in the countryside. I have always loved the countryside, but I have recently grown to appreciate it even more now that I cycle everywhere rather than drive - its also a good deal cheaper.

I moved to Corfe Castle, Dorset in 1993 and have been a postman on a bike in Corfe since 1996. I have also recently started a small self employed business making and repairing models. As such I do a fair amount of work for Corfe Castle Model Village and Gardens.

In my spare time at the weekends, whan I am not doing a bit of DIY, cleaning the bike or tackling one of my own projects. I also go on countryside tasks, these are organised by a number of bodies; The Green Team( English Nature) , BTCV (British Trust for Conservation Volunteers) but I mostly go on tasks with the DCV ( Dorset Countryside Volunteers). We undertake a wide range of work which varies according to the season. In winter there is Coppicing, Hedgelaying, Gorse Scrub and pine clearance on downlands and heathlands. In the Summer we tackle drystone walls, clear ponds, carry out footpath work and build steps. It sounds like hard work, and it is, but it is very satisfying and they are a great bunch of people. I always thoroughly enjoy myself!

One of the other things I enjoy doing is Karaoke, I sometimes go to Dorchester and occasionally elsewhere when I am not helping to run our Karaoke in the Royal British Legion club here in Corfe.

Earlier I mentioned model making. This is what I am originally trained for, at what is now the Arts Institute at Bournemouth. while I was there, however, along came computer generated models (CGI) and this almost completely destroyed physical model making - a shame since that was what I wanted to do! There are though, occasions where only a physical model will do. One particularly interesting one I did in May/June 2002 was for a local author (Viv Endecott) writing a book celebrating 60 years of Enid Blyton's Famous Five books. She asked me to make a model of Kirren Castle in 'Five on a Treasure Island' to go in a small shop window in Corfe Castle village square. Kirren Castle was based on Corfe Castle except that it was on a small island, so the model included sea in it, and I wanted to make sea that was not solid, i.e. you could see into it. I also decided to do a cross section of the island in order to get everything close to the window - the wrecked ship, the castle, the children and being a cutaway I could also include the gold hidden in the dungeon in the story.

Other commissions I have had include one from the National Trust which was to construct a simple wooden frame model of a timber framed building, with the twist that it had to be easily dismantled so the children could build it over and over again in the education room of Corfe Castle visitors centre.

I have also tackled projects as varied as;

A well head(with pitched roof and winding handle)

Bird table with roof

Built in wardrobe

Model of Corfe Castle and the Rings in 1139 (now in the Greyhound Inn Corfe Castle)

A 1/97 model of the shuttle

Scale model of a section through HMS Warrior 1860's hull showing construction and armour

  and a full(ish) size working (!) mock up of a warp core for a local star trek group (it was 11 feet high!)

So now you know a little of who I am and what I do, please look around the rest of the site to see my cycling adventures.
