Welcome to my new trip that I am planning in 2006

Well after a break last year I have got a new trip that is in the making. As you already might have read I cycled clockwise around the coast of the UK raising money for The League of Friends of Swanage Hospital

This I found most enjoyable so this time I have decided to make things a little more interesting and not only will I be going in the opposite direction but I will be visiting every single Lifeboat station around the UK for my chosen charity this time RNLI .

There are 190 Lifeboat Stations around the country (plus 43 in Ireland that I wont get to), this includes all the islands.

It is probable I will cover about 5000 miles this time using almost all the six months off work I've got, courtesy of my employers the Royal Mail.

I would like to raise £1 for every mile as a target figure to aim at.

Although the RNLI is one of the most supported charities, they are working in a very expensive field (i.e. marine) and as anyone who owns a boat will know they are very expensive to buy and maintain. In addition it is also very expensive to train and maintain the crews qualifications, hence the 'Crew Training Appeal' that I am supporting.

I am aiming to start the trip at the beginning of April this year and I'll be using the trailer again (which was specially built for the last trip) - it has many advantages over panniers. I'm as yet undecided about whether to use the same bike again - the Brompton does have advantages, the two main ones being the large bag that fixes on the front of the bike and it's ability to 'park' (folding the rear wheel underneath it) which means you can stop and look in the trailer without the thing falling over! But, I could do with a bike with more gears and wider tyres - I did a lot more off road paths and old railway lines than I thought I would, last time.

The official start will be from Swanage Lifeboat Station, the exact date will be decided on and posted here when it's known!

I'm in the process of asking for corporate sponsorship to offset the cost of the trip to me; the last trip was very expensive in terms of living expenses! In return I can offer publicity to those firms helping me. This will include stickers on my trailer, a good plug on this website and mentions to media in interviews.

As with the last trip I will have a map of the UK and my current position marked on it, so you will be able to follow my trip around the country and I will be posting pictures and write ups as I go, using the faithful XDA2 mobile phone/PDA which I used on my last trip.
I will be taking a picture of each station I visit and place it onto the website so people can actually see that I really did get there.
